Growing Tips

for a successful dahlia season

  • check on tubers as soon as they arrive, if shrivelling - give a light mist of water to storage media
  • tubers are not beauty queens - small and ugly provide stunning blooms
  • tubers are ready to plant after the risk of frost has passed
  • plant tuber horizontally, with eye and shoot facing upward
  • plant in well draining soil, approximately 10-15cm deep, and 40 cm apart
  • refrain from watering until shoots are above the ground, otherwise watering to early can cause rot
  • support your dahlia growth by staking or corralling
  • once tubers are shooting, give them a good water twice a week - more if the weather is hot
  • pinch your plants when approximately 20cm tall, this promotes more lateral shoots
  • deadheading flowers and generous picking promotes more blooms and extends flowering
  • we recommend digging and dividing at the end of the season
  • enjoy your beautiful dahlia growing journey
